 Jewelry designer Mia Katrin has made a special donation to the treasure
chest of art objects set to be auctioned off at the upcoming Mountain
Palette Arts Gala on July 24. Katrin, whose emerald and gold necklace was a major attraction at the American Heart Association’s 50th
Anniversary “Heart Ball” last February in Charlotte, continues her
generosity with this latest creation, multicolor sapphire and tourmaline
earrings in 18kt gold. The earrings, to be featured at the Gala’s live
auction, have been designed especially for the Avery Arts Council’s
annual fundraiser for the arts.

Mia Katrin, of Jewel Couture, LLC, was recently featured on Fox 5 TV Las Vegas for her "Hearts of Gold" South Sea Pearl Necklace to be featured at the American Heart Association's (AHA) Heart Ball in 2008, but in learning about Katrin's work with the AHA I came across the piece below.

Briolettes are still super hot right now, especially for gemstone jewelry designs like these from JEWEL COUTURE LLC who continues to expand on its Precious Briolette Collection.
 A briolette is a side-drilled, rather than drilled from top to bottom, bead. It is also very often faceted, like you'd see a faceted stone in a ring for instance. The company has some bragging rights too:

A special addition to the event this year was a raffle for a one-of-a-kind, handmade necklace by Jewelry Designer Mia Katrin. 'Blue Heaven' was made specifically for the Arts Gala event and generated a lot of excitement in the community--as well as funds for AAC. The raffle alone raised over $4,000. Guests were thrilled when the winning ticket was drawn. The winner--Alisa Hall, daughter of Al & Chris Petti (Chris served as Co-chair of the Gala Committee this year)! Alisa lives in California with her husband and works as Assistant Curator of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. She fell in love with the necklace after seeing it in a photo sent by her mother. She promptly mailed in a check for $50--for just 2 tickets! A lucky lady indeed!"

Gallery 9 near Banner Elk in the High Country of North Carolina, will feature the acrylic and mixed media paintings of Dina Lowery complimented by the exquisite gold and precious gem necklaces of Mia Katrin. The show will open on July 9 with a reception for the artists and will run through August 16.
When a painter and a jeweler share the same medium, all that glitters must be gold. Underneath the enchanting florals and contemporary landscapes of Dina Lowery’s acrylic canvases, lie layers of gold. Gold leaf that is, and often silver as well. For Mia Katrin, the more karats the better. Her love of diamonds, emeralds and rubies are sashayed with exuberance in the classy designs of her 18-22 karat gold necklaces and earrings....
Mia Katrin, a High Country resident, has made a career out of the pursuit of beauty and serenity. With a PhD in aesthetics, Katrin taught philosophy before going off to teach transcendental meditation in India. During her stay in India, she made notable contacts with gem brokers from India, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Colombia and began her own brokerage business. It wasn’t long before she was using her good connections to create her own sensational designs.
Katrin’s pieces will include a Colombian emerald necklace with briolette gems cut specifically for the piece. Sapphires compliment aquamarine in 18-22 karat beadwork as do rubies and rubellite and diamonds and platinum. Each design is one of a kind. Katrin and Lowery will both be present to discuss their works at and artist’s reception from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 9.

"Gallery 9 Weekend Show of Local Artists Joan Sporn and Mia Katrin
Diminutive women with insatiable appetites and a love of travel. Sound like a SWF personal listing? Could be, but in this case they’ve already found their love. Painter Joan Sporn and jeweler Mia Katrin have traveled the world over in search of their favorite subjects, and fortunately for the High Country, they’ll be sharing their objects of desire during a special weekend gathering July 10 and 11 at Gallery 9 in Foscoe....
If diamonds are a girls’ best friend, then Mia Katrin’s everyday buddies are rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Katrin’s fascination with wearable art began when she was a child in Philadelphia making jewelry from her own copper enameling kiln. After completing a doctorate in aesthetics from the University of Chicago, Katrin began a colorful teaching career, first as a professor of philosophy in Pennsylvania, followed by a decade of globe trotting, teaching transcendental meditation.
It was during a year in India that Katrin began making the contacts that would change the direction of her life. With gem mining associates in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Colombia, and India, Katrin began collecting and brokering semi-precious and precious gems. Brokering led to designing. “I’ve always had an eye for design, and I’ve always had a desire to create high end necklaces.” For the past ten years, Katrin has been carefully selecting only the finest quality gems from around the world, “to play with, to move around, until suddenly it all comes together in a beautiful design, and wow!”
The necklaces displayed at Gallery 9 are highlighted with 18-22 karat gold and feature tourmaline, aquamarine, rubies, emeralds, lapis, jade, pearls and tanzanite. “It’s interesting, I’ve always been fascinated by the briolette shape and now it’s the latest craze.” Briolette refers to multi faceted drop-shaped gems, strands of which were popularized in the Victorian Age and were once the favorite of Marie Antoinette. One of Katrin’s most exquisite pieces is a triple strand emerald briolette necklace. Another briolette design features tanzanite, a rare, semi precious gem discovered several decades ago in Tanzania by Tiffany’s.
Sporn and Katrin will be at Gallery 9 from 3-6 pm on Saturday and 1-3 pm on Sunday to discuss their work. Katrin’s necklaces will be modeled while Mark Rossi of Louisiana Purchase will provide sumptuous hors d’oeuvres to compliment Sporn’s café scenes. Featured in the main gallery are the works of Kate Worm; figure studies in gouache and oil. The public is invited to attend.
